Fire prevention
Fire detection
Detection is synonymous with saving lives. The earlier a fire is detected the greater the chances are of survival.
Since 1 July 2006, all dwellings in the Walloon Region have to be fitted with smoke detectors.
Which detectors? How do they work?
You must choose detectors that are accredited and meet European safety standards.
The detectors produce an audible signal when the concentration of smoke in the air exceeds a certain threshold. The battery-operated appliances have a button for testing they are working properly. The produce an intermitted signal when the batteries need replacing (ever year, every two years or every five years depending on the models).
Where and how should they be fitted?
There should be at least one detector on each floor of your dwelling, but you are strongly urged to place one in each of the following rooms:
- bedroom
- living room
- cellar
- porch
- entrance hall
It is very easy to fit detectors (preferably on the ceiling and the fasteners are supplied with the appliances).
