•   Adoption in Belgium

The document drawn up by the justice of the peace or a notary has to be approved by the court of first instance.

The registry of the court forwards a copy of the judgement or the ruling approving the adoption to the Registrar of births, marriages and deaths for transcript.

•   Adoption undertaken abroad

The adoption certification and the confirmation of registration issued by the Federal Public Service for Justice in Brussels may be deposited for recording in the Registry Office registers of the municipality where the adopters and/or the adoptee reside.

The adoption request has to be made to a notary or a justice of the peace. The Registry office is involved only at the end of the procedure to record the judgement
